The Nelder Grove is a great place to get the family out for a variety of shorter hikes with great photo opportunities. I spent a few days exploring the area with my son, Shane, and our four legged companion, Maya. Great easy going trails with photo opportunities and picnicking for a day out with your family, or even an overnight stay that is close to home. Take highway 41 north towards Yosemite and turn right at Sierra Sky Ranch. It is about 10 miles from the turn off to the parking area at the Nelder Grave trail heads. There is a map posted at the trail head.
The Chimney Tree loop is about 1.4 miles long and can take anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes long. I would suggest taking your time in order to get great photos of your family outing. Your canine friends are welcome to come along, as long as you keep them leashed and clean up after them. If you want to take a longer stroll keep on going until you come to the Bull Buck Tree. The Bull Buck is an amazing specimen of a Giant Sequoia and a must see.

Shadow of the Giants
The Shadow of the Giants trail is one of my favorites. You follow the directions to the Nelder Grove and turn left towards the Shadow of the Giants that is located just before the Nelder Grove camping sites/trail heads entrance. There is a sign that indicates where to turn. The road in is about 1 mile in length, and is a bit rough. It is a dirt road with many pot holes and crevices to maneuver so take it slow and be alert. A kiosk is located at the trail head. Bathroom facilities are also available, but they are of the primitive type.
This trail is beautiful: quite, serene, and senic. Four legged friends are welcome as long as you have them on a leash and clean up after them.
